Choosing a business event: is it relevant to your current priority?
A practical checklist for deciding whether a business event can move a supplier, buyer, distributor or market-entry priority forward.
By MEDL International Business Relations
Choosing a business event should begin with your current priority, not the event’s size or reputation. Before registering, ask whether the people, information or conversations available there can move one defined commercial requirement forward.
A business event can be useful when it helps you qualify a market, meet a relevant buyer or supplier, compare options, or understand whether a relationship is worth pursuing. It is less useful when the objective is simply to collect contacts without knowing what type of conversation you need.
A practical event-relevance checklist
Before committing time and travel, check five points:
- What is the specific outcome? Define one result: for example, shortlist suppliers, test interest from distributors, meet procurement decision-makers, or understand an industry’s current requirements.
- Who needs to be present? Look beyond the exhibitor list. Are the manufacturers, buyers, distributors, advisers or technical teams relevant to your requirement likely to attend?
- Does the format support the right conversation? A conference, trade exhibition, factory visit, buyer meeting or networking reception can each serve a different purpose.
- What will you bring to the conversation? Prepare a short requirement, product summary, capability note or question list. A clear starting point produces better meetings than a general introduction.
- What happens after the event? Decide in advance which follow-up would count as progress: a specification exchange, a supplier quotation, a second meeting or an introduction to another decision-maker.
A hypothetical example
A Turkish manufacturer wants to find GCC distribution partners. It considers a large general business forum because it expects many visitors. The better question is whether the event will put it in front of companies that already distribute the relevant product category and can discuss market coverage, route to market and commercial fit.
If the answer is unclear, the manufacturer may be better served by researching potential partners first and using an event only to deepen selected conversations. The same preparation is useful when finding a GCC distributor and when comparing supplier quotations: start with the decision you need to make.

Next step: write one sentence describing the commercial priority an event must support. If you cannot do that, postpone registration until the objective is clearer.
